In the days leading up to Christmas, I decided that I had just a few more things to get; mostly baking supplies. I took Cael to Target to buy them. As soon as we walked through the door I asked him if he needed to go to the bathroom. He said no. I asked if he was sure...he said, "I know I don't have to go to the bathroom." So, we started to make our rounds. I had just picked up a couple of items from one side of the store and was headed to the baking supplies...
Cael: Mom? I need to go to the bathroom really bad!
Me: Seriously? I just asked you 5 minutes ago...you have to go right now or can I finish shopping first?
Cael: I have to go REALLY bad!
Well, I didn't have time to put the few things I had picked up back where they belonged (and didn't want to). I also didn't want to just leave them in a random place to be picked up and moved by a fellow shopper or employee. I decided to ask the nice lady at the register if she could hold them while I took Cael to the bathroom. She was very nice and said yes.
Cael: (to the nice employee): Don't take them; I need them! I'll be right back!
Employee: (chuckling): I promise it will be here when you come back.
When we finished in the restroom we went back for our stuff.
Cael: Is it still there mommy? Did that lady take it?
Me: No, it's right here where she left it. What do you say to the nice lady?
Cael: (holding on to the stuff): It's mine!
Me: (as the employee laughs): How about "thank you"?
Cael: (still clutching the items): Thank you, it's mine and I need it. You can't take it.
Employee: (laughing): You are welcome...I won't take it.
I guess it's time to explain the finer points of using manners to him again...at least the lady had a sense of humor and wasn't offended...
