Santa...12/12/11

We went to the doctor this past Monday to hear the new baby's heartbeat.  Cael was able to come and was so excited...while the midwife was trying to find the heartbeat, she was talking to Cael to distract him...

Midwife: So, are you ready for Christmas?
Cael: Yes!
Midwife: Are you excited for Santa to come to your house?  Is he going to bring you lots of good things?
Cael: (giving her a concerned look) You know Santa is not real? (then, trying to encourage her) But God gives us good stuff all the time...
Midwife: So...are you going to get good stuff for Christmas?
Cael: Yes!

Hahaha...she wasn't sure what to say.  Lucky for her, she found the heartbeat and the conversation was over.  I love my son!

Backfire...11/29/11

Cael was getting ready for school this morning while I fixed my hair...

Cael: (putting on his red uniform shirt) Mom, why don't I have a white shirt?
Me: We don't buy the white uniform shirts because they get dirty so quickly.
Cael: I really want a white one...
Me: Sorry big guy, we don't have any.
Cael: Well, Steven gets to wear white shirts...
Me: Is your name Steven?
Cael: Well, I wanted to name me Steven but you decided on Cael...

I had to laugh.  I'm pretty sure he still wants the white shirt and that Steven will be his example when we have this conversation again...

Nice Try...11/14/11

We were sitting down for dinner last night when Jarod and Cael had this conversation...

Cael: (looking at Jarod's glass)  Dad, I have water...is that Sprite?
Jarod: (trying to answer the question without confirming or lying)  It's clear just like your water.  Why would you say it's Sprite?
Cael: Well, water doesn't have bubbles and yours does.  It's Sprite...nice try.

Busted!  Jarod just looked at me with his "this is your child" expression...at least he's observant!

Cheesy Jokes 101...11/13/11

Cael was on the phone with my dad last night talking about Spiderman when he thought of a joke...

Cael: Papa, when does a spider wake up to eat?
Papa: When?  I guess whenever he wants to...
Cael: "Web"-feast...Not whenever he wants to.  Where did you get that?  That's just crazy...

I'm sure this is the first of many cheesy jokes to be told by my child...he is, after all, his father's son and part Brock!  I'm just not sure where he got this first one...

Baggy Pants...10/20/11

Jarod and I were getting Cael ready for school this morning and Jarod put his new pants on him without fully adjusting the waist.  We made it down the stairs before Cael started complaining...

Cael: Dad, my pants aren't right!  They keep falling down...
Jarod: Let me see...I think they're fine...
Me: (chuckling because I know how Cael is about his clothes) Just tighten them a bit...
Cael: Look Dad, I'm not going to deal with pants that fall down all day...

Hahaha...I hope and pray that he keeps this attitude all his life!  I hate to see boys with clothes that are falling off!!  PS. We fixed his pants after we quit laughing...he just kept saying, "Stop laughing at me!  I'm serious, I don't want my pants to keep falling down! They need to fit!"  I really do love this child!

I know him...10/17/11

Cael was talking to my dad on the phone today...

Daddy: Alright, Spiderman...I have to go in here and talk to this store manager but I'll call you back later.
Cael: What's his name?
Daddy: His name is Joe.  You don't know him.
Cael: Sure, I know him!  His name is Joe...he's a manager!

Hahaha...Spiderman has connections I don't even know about!

Thin Air...10/16/11

Cael and I were goofing off and picking on one another before I put him down for a nap...

Me: Cael, you're crazy!
Cael: (to no one) Crazy?! She called me crazy!
Me: Cael, who are you talking to?
Cael: What?
Me: Who are you talking to?  There isn't anyone else here...you're talking to thin air...
Cael: (to me) You're thin air! (to no one)  Ha...she calls me crazy and then wants to know who I'm  talking to!

I still have no idea who he was talking to...maybe I'm the crazy one!

Genius...9/28/11

I was on the way to work/school with Cael when someone cut us off and almost caused an accident...

Cael: Hey, Genius!  Mom, who let that genius drive?

Funny...I was thinking the exact same thing...

Raining...9/20/11

My mom was getting ready to leave for work this morning when Cael stopped her...

Cael: Grandma! Grandma?
Mom: Yes, Cael?
Cael: Grandma, I really really love you and it's raining outside.  Maybe you should stay home until it stops so you don't get soaked...

Such a sweet kid...I love the relationship they have!

Matching...9/19/11

Cael and I were getting ready to go on a picnic with his daddy and some friends...

Cael: Mom, we match!
Me: We do? That's great!
Cael: We do match...you always match me.
Me: It's because I'm awesome...right?
Cael: (giving me the strangest look) No...it's because we wear the same color...

Thank you, Cael, for once again making me feel silly and giving me a good laugh all at once!

Precisely...9/16/11

We were driving home from Alabama this past weekend and it was getting pretty late.  Cael was bored and trying to keep himself awake...

Cael: Mom, do you see this toy? (holding up a Ninja Turtle)
Me: Yes...
Cael: Who is it?
Me: It's a Ninja Turtle.  Leonardo.
Cael: What color is his mask?
Me: Blue.
Cael: What does he fight with?
Me: Swords.
Cael: What color is his belt?
Me: I don't know...black?
Cael: No, no, no...incorrect.  His belt is brown, mom.  Let's try this again...What color is his belt?
Me: Brown...
Cael: Correct!  Grandma, what color is his belt?
My mom: Brown?
Cael: Precisely!  Good job!

He cracks me up with some of the words he picks up...and uses correctly!

People are sleeping...9/4/11

We went to my uncle's house this past Sunday to spend some time with family.  We left pretty late to head home.  Cael wanted to listen to his favorite song on the way home (I want it all back)...

Cael: Dad, can I listen to "Take it, take it by force"?
Jarod: Sure.  (turning on the song and turning it up)
Cael: (Very serious) Dad!  Turn that down!  It's late and people are sleeping!  You are going to wake them up!
Jarod: They can't hear the music in our car.
Cael: They can if it's loud.  Turn it down!

Such a conscientious child.  Making his mother proud and his father laugh...

Doctors and Babies...9/2/11

We recently found out that my cousin and his lovely wife are having a baby (exciting news).  I was telling Cael about it before we met them for lunch this past Sunday...

Me: Aunt Brittany is going to have a baby.
Cael: TODAY?
Me: No, not today.  She won't have the baby for several more months.  She has the baby in her belly right now.
Cael: Oh.  Is it a boy or a girl?
Me: Well, we don't know yet.
Cael: Why?
Me: Well, the doctor can't tell if it is a boy or girl, yet.  They have to wait a few months...
Cael: That's ridiculous!  They need another doctor that will tell.
Me:  Do you think it's a boy or a girl?
Cael: I don't know.  They can have whatever they want...

I did inform my cousin and his wife that Cael thinks their doctor needs to be replaced and that they can choose the gender of this child.  Life, according to Cael, could be so easy...

Dad let me...8/9/11

I was getting the bath ready for Cael last night when he asked if he could take a green bouncy ball into the tub with him...

Me: I really don't think you need it.  You're just getting a quick bath and bouncy balls aren't meant to be bath toys...
Cael: My dad let me play with it last night!  He said it was okay...

(Note: the night before last, I had gone to the school for orientation and Jarod had taken care of all of Cael's night time needs, including his bath.)

Me: I guess if dad let you last night then it's okay.  I still don't see why you need it.
Jarod: (overhearing our conversation) Are you talking about that little ball?  I wasn't going to let him have it last night but he said that you let him have it in the tub.
Me: I never let him have it...he told me you said it was okay.
Jarod: Well, I did after I thought you said it was okay...

So, the little trickster wins again...I think we're going to have to check in with one another to avoid giving our 3 year old the upper hand.  At least it was something simple and silly this time.

Smart Mouth...8/2011

Last week, Cael and I were getting things ready to go to school for my work week.  I was on the phone trying to take care of something and he just kept interrupting.  When I finally got off the phone and was trying to do something else, he was still talking...

Cael: Mom?  Mom?  (asking a question that had no point with regards to what we were doing)
Me: Cael, please stop talking for just a minute.  Let me do this and then you can ask me anything.  Just close your mouth and don't open it again for a few minutes...

I finally finished taking care of whatever it was and was ready to talk...

Me: Okay Cael, what do you need?  Do you want juice or milk?  Cael?  Are you listening to me?
Cael: (looking right at me and never opening his mouth)  mmm, mmm mmm mmm hmmm hmmm....
Me: What are you doing?
Cael: (pointing to him mouth and shaking his head)...
Me: "Ha ha"...you can open your mouth now.

I'm pretty sure I'm out of luck if he's starting this early...Jarod says it's my fault but I can't imagine why (insert innocent smile here).

What is wrong with you...7/26/11

Cael pretended make me a cake this morning, "just because"...

Me: (pretending to eat the whole thing)  Yum, that's good!  Thanks!
Cael: (shaking his head and looking disappointed) Mom, what is wrong with you?  The candles were on top...now, spit them out!  You can't eat the cake all at one time...you need to eat one piece at a time!  Let's try again...

Nothing like getting a lesson in manners from my 3 year old...when will I ever learn?

If you build it...7/26/11

Cael and I were building with domino's today when he decided to test my abilities...

Cael: Mom, I really like your tower!  Good job!
Me: Thanks.  That's about as good as it gets.
Cael: Okay, now will you build a boat?
Me: I don't know if I can...
Cael: Sure you can.  Just try!  Then you can build a Noah and all the animals to go in the boat!

I think he has overestimated my abilities by a long shot!  Wow...

Peace be still...7/24/11

On the way home from SC we turned the radio on to get Cael's mind off of leaving.  The first words we heard in the song that was playing were, "Peace be still."

Cael: (getting very excited and talking very fast) Mom!  Peace be still! That's what Jesus said when he was in the boat and it was storming and thunder and lightning were coming and the boat was rocking really big.  The men with Jesus were really terrified and Jesus said, "peace be still", and then the storm stops and the water is good and everybody was happy...

Talk about an amazing story!  It sounds even better when heard through the thoughts of a 3 year old...

Dramatic...7/24/11

We had a wonderful visit with Nana last week and sadly dropped her off at the airport on Wednesday.  Cael was very unhappy about this and cried half way home...which in the pouring rain is about 25 minutes...we thought taking him to see his Grandma and Papa for the weekend would cheer him up.  We were right until it was time to leave...

Cael: (patting Papa's arm) Well Papa, I guess it's time for me to get on the road and go to the internet to get back to Georgia.
Me: You mean the interstate.
Cael: (nodding) Yes, the interstate to get back to Georgia.

We were amused and thought this was going well until we got in the car and made it about 10 miles away...

Cael: (starting to cry) Mom, why do we have to do this?  I really hate this!
Me: I know buddy but we have to go home.  You'll see Grandma and Papa again soon...
Cael: I know...I just really hate to see me go!

It's so hard being a 3 year old...

Lunch...7/20/11

We were eating lunch today when Cael decided he wanted part of mine...

Cael: Mom, can I eat some of yours?
Me: No.  You can't have any of mine until you eat yours.  You haven't even touched your sandwich.
Cael: (touching his sandwich)  There.  I touched it...can I have yours now?

Quick wit or smart mouth...I can't decide.

That stinks...7/16/11

My dad had bought Cael a remote control car to play with.  When they opened the package, it wouldn't work...

Cael: It doesn't work! Why?
Mom: I don't know...that stinks!
Cael: Wait...let me smell it.  (sniffing)  It doesn't stink to me...

We are really going to have to work on idioms...

One, Two...7/13/11

We were having dinner with my nieces and nephew when Cael decided that Haley needed to go to the corner...

Cael: You need to go to the corner.
Haley: Why?
Cael: Well, you cheated at the game and you lied.
Haley: I'm not going to the corner.
Cael: (holding up his fingers) One, two...
(Haley wasn't moving)
Cael: Don't make me get to three...one, two...one, two...

He may have met his match...

Breakfast...7/13/11

My nieces and nephew were in town last week to visit.  Cael, of course, had a blast with them.  He and Haley (my oldest niece) were playing in the living room...

Haley: I'm going to get you!
Cael: I'm a ninja turtle!  You can't get me!
Haley: I eat ninja turtles for breakfast!
Cael: (stopping to point at her) No you don't!  You eat cereal for breakfast...

He's so literal...

Cael's Logic...7/8/11

We were driving home from the store today when Cael decided to correct Jarod's driving.  They had already "argued" about a few things and Jarod decided to give Cael a choice...

Jarod: Would you rather walk?
Cael: Sir?
Jarod:(jokingly) I can stop the car here and let you walk the rest of the way.  I'll stop and put you out if you want...
Cael: If you put me out; I'm not walking home.
Me: (chuckling) What are you going to do if you don't walk home?
Cael: Well, I'd shoot at the car and break a window.  Then, I'd jump back in.  When I get home, I'm leaving and going to NORTH CAROLINA!

Get ready Grandma and Papa...Cael already wants to come live with you!

Time to pray...6/23/11

We sat down to lunch Thursday as a family (my husband was off) and Cael decided he wanted to say the blessing...

Cael: Dear Jesus, please bless this food, and our family, and this wonderful day you have given us.  Bless my mom to know the spirit of God and bless my dad to behave himself.  In Jesus name, AMEN.

I love this child...he blessed our food, made me laugh, and left Jarod speechless!

The point...6/23/11

Cael wandered downstairs early Thursday morning (6:40) to find my mom sitting in the living room...

Cael: Grandma, what are you doing?
Mom: Well, I finished exercising and thought I would pray for a little while...
Cael: No.  The point is, you shouldn't leave your room until I come to get you.

Poor lady...living with us, she needs all the prayer time she can get!

Bad Guys...6/22/11

Cael and I were playing with his blocks this past Wednesday when he decided that Gotham City was in great danger...

Cael: Mom...I mean Batgirl, we need to go fight the bad guys!
Me: Okay.  Let's go!
Cael: Okay, you can fight the bad guys but don't fight Mr. Freeze.  He's my obligation.

Then he just ran off like it is completely normal for a 3 year old to use a word like "obligation".

Meet the pilot...6/11/11

Following our visit with the very understanding customs agent, I explained to Cael that he needed to use his real name.  We were still in the midst of this very important discussion when we boarded our plane.  As soon as we stepped on the plane, one of the lovely stewardesses looked at Cael and decided that he needed to meet the pilot and, of course, Cael was very agreeable...

Pilot: Hello young man!  What is your name?
Cael: Well...(looking at me)...my actual name is Cael but everyone calls me Batman.
Pilot: (laughing) Oh, I see.  Well Batman, how would you like to help me check our systems for flight?
Cael: Okay.  Then I have to go fight crime in Gotham City...

I'm beginning to wonder if my child really believes that he is Batman...it's cute at three but, I'm pretty sure, it won't be as cute when he's 23!

Customs...6/11/11

This past week we took a much needed vacation to see my amazing younger sister, Samantha.  Of course, going to Canada is quite a drive so we opted to fly.  It was Cael's first adventure in an airport and he took advantage of every moment; especially the moments spent with the customs agent...

Customs Agent: (handing Cael's passport back to us) Hello buddy.  What is your name?
Me: (In a stern whisper) Your real name...
Cael: My name is...Cael.
(This answer gave me some confidence in him.)
Customs Agent: How old are you?
Cael: 3
Customs Agent: What is your last name?
Cael: Batman.
Customs Agent: (chuckling) Okay...and who is this guy right here? (pointing at Cael's slightly embarrassed father)
Cael: Oh that's just Spiderman!  Superman and Ironman are up there! (pointing in his Papa and Uncle Randy's direction)
Customs Agent: (looking back to me as I shake my head and apologize)  He's cute and I'm sure he's yours.

This child is going to give me grey hair...I'm sure of it!

Let's not do that...6/7/11

I took Cael to see his friends at school today.  When we walked in, one of the little boys ran over and gave me a hug.  He started swinging on my hand and I guess Cael wasn't impressed.

Cael: (reaching up to put both hands on the boy's shoulders): Okay, let's not do that.  She's my mom.

At least he was gentle although pretty possessive...

Playing with Cael...6/6/11

Cael asked me to come to his room to play yesterday morning.  Of course, I agreed and picked up his Batman and Robin figures.  Just as I made them start talking he swooped in with his Spiderman figure...

Cael: (speaking as Spiderman): Hey!  What are you doing in my city fighting crime?
Me: (as Batman): Uh...we weren't fighting crime.  We were just hanging out...you know, sight seeing.
Cael: (Spiderman): Oh.  Well, next time you need to send me a message first and tell me you're coming.  Don't be rude...

I am definitely never showing up on his doorstep unannounced!

Yard Sale...6/4/11

This past Saturday we had a yard sale.  Cael was very ready to help until he noticed that his old toddler tent was out there and a very nice lady was looking at it...

Cael: Hi.  Don't touch that.  My mom says we can't touch that.
Lady: (looking confused and amused)  Oh...
Me: Cael, it's fine.  She can touch it...she might want to buy it.
Cael: Oh...(to the lady)...she said we can't touch it.
Me: Cael!
Cael: (to me in a growling whisper) It's mine!  (turning back to the lady with a sweet smile)

I had to wait for him to go inside to sell the silly tent.  He was more than willing to sell anything else...

That's not good enough...6/1/11

I was talking to Cael about the birthday shopping we are doing later today for his daddy.  I told him about the two gifts that we are going to buy him...

Cael: Is that all?
Me: Yes.  I thought that was good; don't you?
Cael: Well, that's not good enough!  I think we need to get him 5 things...
Me: Really?  What do you suppose we should get him?
Cael: Okay.  We need to get him...(names the two things I mentioned)...a Batman, bananas, and some cupcakes!  That is a great birthday present!
Me: Do you really think daddy is going to play with a Batman?
Cael: Yes, and he can share.

Oh, the fine art of buying something for someone else that you know you will end up getting.  If he grasps this concept at three, I feel bad for his future wife...just imagine how he will have perfected it by then!

Lessons...5/29/11

I was sitting in my sewing room when I heard Cael speaking very sternly to someone.  When I went to check on him I found him correcting Carmine (our dog).

Cael: (on the stairs holding Carmine's ear)  You need to walk down the stairs.  No running!

(He lets go of Carmine's ear and Carmine trots down the stairs)

Cael: Come back here!  I just told you to walk!  I'm not trying to be mean to you...if you run, you might fall down and hurt yourself!  I'm trying to save you!

Me: Cael, what are you doing?

Cael: Being frustrated!  I tried to teach Carmine his lessons but he wants to fall down the stairs! I gave it my best try...if he falls, I won't feel bad for him!

He was so serious.  I'm thinking that Cael needs a friend so he'll stop talking to the dog and stuffed animals!

A Prince...5/27/11

Cael saw a prince in a movie and decided that he really wanted to be a prince one day.  He was pretending to be the prince but wasn't listening to me...

Me: Cael, you need to listen or you could have a very unpleasant time today.
Cael: "Very unpleasant"?  What does that mean?
Me: It means that you will not enjoy it...I'll have to punish you for not listening.
Cael: Oh...well, I'm the prince of this castle and a prince doesn't get a spanking.  I'm sure of it!

Crazy child...

Be honest...5/21/11

We traveled to a family reunion in Alabama this past Saturday with my mom and dad.  Daddy was trying to get directions to the community center in which this shindig was to be held but Mom isn't too good with directions and, although she thought her directions made perfect sense, Daddy made a wrong turn...Cael is, of course, observing the entire situation from the back seat...

Mom: Not this way...you should have kept going straight.
Daddy: You said to go the same direction I would go to get to Carolyn's house.
Mom: Yes, except you don't turn left.
Daddy: I was following your directions.
Cael: (very serious) Grandma, just be honest with him about it.  No matter what way we need to go, just be honest.  That's all...

Well, honesty is the best policy.  Nothing like having a 3 year old remind you of that fact!  Hysterical...side note: At least we made it to the reunion on time.

Hair Bow...5/20/11

I was driving Cael to school this morning when he decided to critique my sense of style...

Cael: Mom, you look beautiful today!
Me: Thank you, little man!
Cael: Are your kids going to see that bow?

(side note: I'm wearing a ribbon in my hair to keep back the fly aways)

Me: Yes.  Why? Don't you like my hair thing?
Cael: Well...it's better than my hair thing.
Me: You don't have a hair thing.
Cael: I know.  That's why yours is better.

I guess I should have seen that coming and I'm pretty sure that was his way of telling me that I should change my hair.  Oh well, it's too late once I'm out the door...at least he thinks I look beautiful!

Broken...5/17/11

I woke Cael up this morning and carried him into the bathroom to get him ready for school, as is our usual routine.  When I get him into the bathroom he was a little more drowsy than usual...

Cael:(shaking his shoulders and letting his arms flail around): Uhhhhhhh....
Me: Cael, what are you doing?
Cael: Mom, I'm just stretching my arms to make sure they work...
Me: What?
Cael: Never mind...sometimes they are broken...I'm just checking...

Jarod and I have decided that this is his way of describing what happens when his arms fall asleep.  He was so serious about it and completely relieved to find that his arms were in working order!

Monday, May 16, 2011

Geese...5/16/11

Cael and I were getting into the car this morning when some geese flew overhead "honking"...

Cael: Mom, is that the geese?
Me: Yes.
Cael: What are they doing?
Me: Well, they are honking.
Cael: Who is in their way?
Me: Nobody.  That's just how they communicate with each other.  It's how they talk.
Cael: Well, they need to learn to whisper.  That's loud and people are trying to sleep!

I love his logic and I couldn't agree more!  Now all we have to do is train the geese of this world to whisper...

What a shame...5/14/11

Cael and I were discussing my parents upcoming move to North Carolina.  He hadn't quite grasped the concept that they would be selling the house they live in now and it would no longer be "Grandma and Papa's" house...

Cael: When will we go to Grandma and Papa's house if they are in North Carolina?
Me: Well, we will go to their new house to visit but we won't go to the house we go to now because they won't live there anymore.  Someone else will live there.
Cael: Can they come visit?
Me: They will come visit.  They'll just stay with us instead of sleeping at the house they live in now.
Cael: They can't keep their house?
Me: No...they have to sell this one to buy a new one in North Carolina so they have a place to live there.
Cael: Oh...I think it's a shame that Grandma and Papa can't keep their house.  Poor Grandma and Papa!

I didn't fill him in on the fact that I think it's a shame, too!  Oh well, he'll have a whole new house to explore...

Bad idea...5/14/11

Jarod and Cael were watching the Looney Tunes (Wile E. Coyote) together this past Saturday.  The coyote had fallen off the cliff for the second or third time...

Cael: Well, that seemed like a bad idea...
Jarod: What?
Cael: He should pay attention the first time.  That was a bad idea...

Truer words were never spoken...too bad the coyote never figures it out!

Give me a minute...5/12/11

I went into Cael's room this morning and, after turning off his fans, gently pulled back the covers to wake him up...as I always do.

Me: Good morning, little man.
Cael: Mom, can you give me a minute?
Me: Okay, but it's time to get up and go to school.
Cael: (reaching down to the bottom of the bed)I don't need school; I need these.  (pulling the covers back up over himself)
Me: No, I need you to get up so we are not late.
Cael: I won't take long to sleep...just 5 minutes!

I cannot believe that we are starting the "just 5 more minutes" thing at 3.  I am pretty sure I'm in for a long road ahead!

Preferences...5/11/11

We were having turkey dogs last night and I was trying to help Cael fix his...

Me: Cael, do you want ketchup on this?
Cael: No.
Me: Okay, how about mustard?
Cael: No.
Me: Are you sure you don't want anything?  It might be a little dry if you don't put anything on it...
Cael: (gently cutting in) Mom, I prefer just the bun.

I gave up and he ate it plain...prefer...I just love to hear him talk sometimes!

Rapscallion...5/8/11

We were having dinner at mom and daddy's house for Mother's Day when Cael decided to help my dad out with his drink...

Cael: (taking daddy's tea glass) I'll take this off your hands...
Daddy: (laughing)...
Cael: You won't be needing tea where you're going, rapscallion!

He was too funny and seemed so serious.  Of course, once he got a laugh, he was all about performing this scene again!

Rapscallion: a scamp or rascal

Noisy...5/7/11

Daddy took Cael to Home Depot to get some mulch this past Saturday afternoon.  The gentlemen had just finished loading the back of the truck...

My Dad: Thanks, fellas.
Cael: Hey, fellas...what was all that noise about?
Worker: We were loading the mulch into the truck for you.
Cael: Well you were being very noisy...

I must teach him about being appreciative...

No choice...5/7/11

Carmine (our dog) got into the wet dirt this morning when I let him out back.  I went to the door to let him in with Cael...

Me: Eww, Carmine!  Why?  Now you're all dirty...
Cael: I guess we'll just have to give him a bath.  I know Carmine doesn't like a bath and he doesn't want a bath but he just doesn't get a choice.  Oh well, you get what you get and you don't cry about it.

This conversation sounds oddly familiar...at least he is listening and he uses the lessons he has learned at the most adorable times.  I love this kid!

You should think about that...5/6/11

Cael and I were driving to work this morning when Cael decided it was time to talk.
I had just turned across a lane of traffic (it was clear) onto another road...

Cael: Mom, why are you driving crazy?
Me: I wasn't, I just had to turn and get out of the way of traffic.
Cael: Well, it was a little fast...you should be careful.  You don't want us to get in an accident, do you?
Me: Well, of course not.  I didn't drive crazy.  You're just being silly...
Cael: It was fast...we need to keep our family safe.  You should really think about that.  I need to pray for you.  I love you, Mom!

What can you say to that.  I need all the prayer I can get and he said he loved me...who cares if my three and a half year old is already telling me how to drive...

Exercise...sometime last week...

Cael decided to get his daily exercise done...

Cael: Mom!  Come look, I can exercise like you!

My child is so creative...

Hide and Seek...5/3/11

Hide and seek is so interesting at our house...

It was my turn to seek and I decided to snap this picture before I told him that he was found.

Cael: Hey!  How did you find me?
Me: (laughing) Well it's my turn to hide.  You go count.
Cael: (climbing out of his "hiding place") Okay, hide there (pointing at this same hiding place) and I'll go count.
Me: I don't want to hide there.  I want to hide on my own.
Cael: What if I can't find you?
Me: Well, that's kind of the point of hide and seek.  I hide and you have to find me.
Cael: Well, I can find you if you hide there!

I finally convinced him to go count and I picked another place to hide.  He is so entertaining!

That's just great...5/2/11

Today is teacher work day and Cael and I were able to come in late to work/school.  When I fixed Cael breakfast this morning he thought he was staying home all day...

Cael: Mom, can we go to the park after breakfast?
Me: No.  Maybe we can go this afternoon.  We have to go to school in a little while.
Cael: What? But it's light outside!  I go to school when it's dark!  You've got to be kidding me...now I'm late!  That's just great...

I tried to explain that he was not late but he didn't believe me until I got him to school.  I think he's going to take after his daddy in this department, thank the Lord!  I hate to be late but sometimes am...Jarod is NEVER late!

What??...4/30/11

Saturday afternoon Cael and I were talking about his friend, Evey, who's mom is pregnant.  Cael was very concerned for "Evey's baby"...

Cael: Mom, when does Evey get to go get her baby?
Me: Well, they will have the baby in July.
Cael: Where is it now?
Me: In Ms. Amanda's tummy.  Did you see the bump on her belly?  That's the baby growing in there.
Cael: What??  Oh no, she swallowed the baby??
Me: No...the baby starts in there...

He was completely ignoring me by this time and, five minutes later, this is the conversation I heard him have with Evey on his imaginary phone.

Cael: (sitting on the couch) Do you want to go to Chuck E Cheese or not? (waiting as if someone is really answering his question)  Well, it doesn't matter.  Your mom already swallowed your baby!

Hysterical...I think we need to have a conversation.  Maybe I'll let his daddy explain!

Remember?...4/26/11

Cael and I were taking a walk with my cousin, Shea, when Cael ran ahead and threw some gravel in our direction.

Me: Cael, come apologize to Uncle Shea.  You cannot throw rocks of any size.
Cael: Sorry...man, now my hands are dirty!
Me: (as he runs ahead again) I wonder why...
Cael: (stopping to turn around a few yards ahead) Because I threw the rocks at you guys...remember?

Sarcasm is lost on this child...

What to watch...4/24/11

Yesterday, Easter Sunday, we were able to celebrate the holiday with some friends of ours.  Their daughter, Evey, and Cael are good friends and had a blast together.  At one point in time, though, they weren't seeing eye to eye about which movie to watch...

Evey: I want to watch the dancing princess movie.
Cael: I want to watch Lightning McQueen.
Evey: No!  Dancing Princess movie!
Cael: No, I want to watch Lightning McQueen...
Evey: But, I don't want to watch Lightning McQueen!
Cael: (putting up his hands) Then close your eyes and go to sleep...I'm watching Lightning McQueen.

I think they ended up going outside to play instead...I love to listen to their conversations.  You learn so much about the world!

Statement vs. Question...4/16/11

Saturday afternoon, while Cael and I were waiting for Jarod to get home from work, Cael and I had a conversation that went something like this...

Cael: When Daddy comes home can we play?
Me: Sure!
Cael: I can be Superman, you can be Batgirl, and Daddy can be Batman!
Me: Wow, Daddy gets to be a good guy?  That's a first...
Cael: I can be Superman, you can be Batgirl, and Daddy can be Joker!
Me: I thought Daddy could be Batman.
Cael: I said Daddy is Joker.
Me: But you said he can be Batman...
Cael: Mom, why are you arguing with me?
Me: I was just asking a question.
Cael: No, that is a statement, not a question.

Who knew our statement vs. question lessons would come back to bite me?!  At least I know he's getting something out of our little side lessons...Jarod ended up being the Riddler, by the way.

Fascinating...4/12/11

I was trying to do some laundry last night to get myself ahead for the weekend.  Cael kept moving things even after I told him to stop...

Me: Cael, if you take one more item of clothing out of this pile and move it to another, I'm going to be very angry with you.
Cael: (with his finger on his face): Hmmmm...Hmmmm
Me: What are you doing?
Cael: (still concentrating): This means it's fascinating, mom.  Hmmmm...

Crazy child!  At least he went downstairs and stopped moving my laundry around!

Tough enough...4/12/11

Cael wanted me to play "bad guys" with him last night.  I finally gave in after his 2 minutes of non-stop "please"...

Me: (pretending to punch and kick the air)
Cael: (doing the same): Like this, mom!
Me: (trying to punch harder): Like this?  I'm tough, right?
Cael: (stopping to give me a sad look): Ummm...you're tough enough, I think.

Gee, thanks Cael...if I didn't feel a bit silly before, I do now=)  That child is so honest...I love him.

The truth about cows...4/11/11

Cael and I were on our way home yesterday and drove past the cows he always feeds.  He had been complaining of his tongue again so I tried to get his mind off of it...

Me: Cael, look, there are the cows you feed.  Wave at the cows!
Cael: Why?  They can't wave back.
Me: I know that...I just thought you could wave at them.
Cael: (not paying attention to me at all) They don't even have hands!

I did manage to get his mind off of his sore tongue but I'm pretty sure he thinks I'm loopy now...

Bad decision...4/11/11

This morning, Cael and I were getting ready to go to work/school...

Cael: Mom, my tongue hurts...(this is the 10 millionth time he has told me this in the past 2 days and the 50th since I had awakened him)
Me: Cael, I'm sorry your tongue hurts.  There is still nothing I can do about it.  If you tell me again, you're not going to be allowed to talk for 5 minutes.
Cael: (grunting and pointing at his tongue): Mom, see?
Me: Cael, I told you not to tell me that your tongue hurts anymore...
Cael: I didn't...I showed you...if I tell you, that's a bad decision.

My child is the king of loopholes at the young age of 3 1/2...I think I'm in big trouble when he gets older!

In Target??...4/10/11

Cael and I went to Target yesterday to get a few things that we needed.  As we were checking out, Cael and the 20 something gentleman working the register had this conversation...

Cael: Hi.  What's your name?
Man: (answers with his name but I can't remember it)
Cael: I'm Cael.  Will you be at work on Friday?
Man: (looking confused) No.  I'm going out of town.
Cael: Out of town?
Man: Yes, I'm going out of state.
Cael: To Florida?
Man: No...(now looking almost uncomfortable)
Cael: Where do you live?
Man: Here...
Cael: (in shock) In Target??  I didn't even see a bed?!
Man: No, not in Target...I mean in town...(totally confused)
Me: (feeling sorry for the guy) Okay, Cael...just tell him good-bye...
Cael: Bye...have a nice day!

That poor cashier will never look at another 3 year old the same ever again...

Discreet...4/2/11

We were at the hospital yesterday visiting my Aunt Nyckie and had been sitting in the waiting room for a while.  I was going to quietly excuse myself so that I didn't interrupt conversation...

Cael: (yelling down the hall)  Mom?  Are you going potty?  Where are you going?
Me: (shaking my head) I'll be back Cael...

So much for a quiet exit.  I'm pretty sure "discreet" is one word my child does not have in his vocabulary...

Unimpressed...4/1/11

I was dropping the school children off in our after school program on Friday and picking Cael up at the same time when one of the school aged boys started talking to Cael...

Boy: Cael, look at this...(turning his eyelids inside out)
Cael: (giving him the strangest look of disgust)  I'm not impressed with that.
Boy: (to me)  Did he just tell me I don't impress him?
Cael: Yes, I did.

He took the words right out of my mouth...I'm amazed by the way he is able to remember all the words we use and his ability to use them correctly!

If you were a boy...3/31/11

Cael and I were driving to work/school this morning in the light rain when Cael had a question...

Cael: Mom, do you have your lights on?
Me: Yes.
Cael: Are you going to leave them on all day...even when you park?
Me: No.
Cael: Why?
Me: If I leave the lights on all day, while I'm parked, the battery will die and the car won't start when it's time to go home.
Cael: And Daddy would have to come fix it?
Me: Well, I could fix a dead battery.
Cael: If you were a boy you could.
Me: I'm a girl and I still could.
Cael: Mom, girls can't fix things because they get a stressed feeling and get tired...then they need a boy to fix it.

I think this is going a bit far...I'm going to have a talk with Cael and Daddy tonight...I am getting that stressed feeling Cael described, though!

I lost my family...3/30/11

We were dropping my cousin Shea back off at the hospital to stay with his mom (she has been very sick and needs prayer) when Cael realized we weren't staying any longer...

Cael: (crying)  I want Shea!
Me: Cael, calm down.  We'll see him again in a day or so.
Cael: (crying harder)  I lost my family and I'll never see them anymore!
Me: You're going to see them again in a few days.
Cael: I'll feel better if you take me back to Uncle Shea...(sniffle)
Me: Sorry, you can't go back tonight.
Cael: (stops crying) Fine...then I'm not making you laugh anymore!

After I finished laughing he told me how this situation was really not funny.  This kid is so dramatic; I swear I'm never bored!

Question from out of nowhere...3/30/11

Cael and I were on our way to work/school this morning when he decided to ask a few questions of his own...

Cael: Mom, are we going to have a baby in our house soon?
Me: No.  Why?
Cael: Evey is having a baby in her house soon.  Can we have one, too?
Me: One day but not any day soon...what would you name a baby if we had one?
Cael: Robin.
Me: What if we bring home a little girl (I realize Robin is for both but he does not)?
Cael: You can't...I'd just squish her up and make a boy.

I think I should probably figure out a way to explain that babies are not made of play-dough...not to mention that a week ago, he was convinced that he would have a sister one day.

What will you do when you grow up?...3/30/11

Cael and I were driving to work this morning...

Cael: Mom, what will you do when you grow up?
Me: I was pretty sure I did grow up...do you know something I don't?
Cael: You're just little now...when you get big then you can grow up.
Me: Okay...well I want to teach.  What will you do when you grow up?
Cael: Be Batman.
Me: What if someone else is already Batman?  What will you do then?
Cael: Be Batman...I'm the original Batman!

When did this child learn the word original and, please tell me he is going to grow out of this phase before I have a grown son running around Atlanta in a cape and tights!

Ready for church...3/27/11

Cael got himself ready for church this morning...

Cael: Mom, I'm ready for church!

Me: I don't think you can go like that.
Cael: Why?  I'm wearing a tie...
Me: I'm pretty sure that's not a tie that was meant for church.
Cael: I can't believe you don't like my outfit!  It hurts my feelings...
Me: I'm sorry.  I didn't mean to hurt your feelings...
Cael: I forgive you...can I wear my tie to church, now?
Me: Nope...still can't go like that.
Cael: Fine...I'll wait for Daddy.

I'm pretty sure his dad is going to say no, too.  I love this child!

No school for Carmine...3/25/11

We were getting ready to walk out the door this morning on our way to work/school when Carmine (our miniature schnauzer) tried to sneak out the door.  I stopped him just before he made it through the opening...

Cael: What is he doing?
Me: I guess he's trying to go with us.
Cael: Well that's ridiculous!  He can't go to school.  He doesn't have permission...or hands!

Poor child was so upset with that dog.  How dare he try to come to school without permission or hands...apparently, that's ridiculous!

**Note: I know it sounds absurd that a 3 year old would use words like ridiculous or permission, however, he truly does say the things that I post.  Luckily, my child is entertaining enough without my needing to invent scenarios.  I hope that this disclaimer makes this blog even more enjoyable to read.  For those of you who talk to my child on a regular basis, you already know this and are probably thinking about the crazy things he has said to you, personally...**
