Shopping for Christmas with Cael...

In the days leading up to Christmas, I decided that I had just a few more things to get; mostly baking supplies.  I took Cael to Target to buy them.  As soon as we walked through the door I asked him if he needed to go to the bathroom.  He said no.  I asked if he was sure...he said, "I know I don't have to go to the bathroom."  So, we started to make our rounds.  I had just picked up a couple of items from one side of the store and was headed to the baking supplies...
Cael: Mom?  I need to go to the bathroom really bad!
Me: Seriously?  I just asked you 5 minutes ago...you have to go right now or can I finish shopping first?
Cael: I have to go REALLY bad!

Well, I didn't have time to put the few things I had picked up back where they belonged (and didn't want to).  I also didn't want to just leave them in a random place to be picked up and moved by a fellow shopper or employee.  I decided to ask the nice lady at the register if she could hold them while I took Cael to the bathroom.  She was very nice and said yes.

Cael: (to the nice employee): Don't take them; I need them!  I'll be right back!
Employee: (chuckling): I promise it will be here when you come back.

When we finished in the restroom we went back for our stuff.

Cael: Is it still there mommy?  Did that lady take it?
Me: No, it's right here where she left it.  What do you say to the nice lady?
Cael: (holding on to the stuff): It's mine!
Me: (as the employee laughs): How about "thank you"?
Cael: (still clutching the items): Thank you, it's mine and I need it.  You can't take it.
Employee: (laughing): You are welcome...I won't take it.

I guess it's time to explain the finer points of using manners to him again...at least the lady had a sense of humor and wasn't offended...

Cael's Thoughts on eating...

Last night we were eating dinner and a bite of food fell off of my husband, Jarod's, fork.  Jarod "growls"...
Cael: Don't get mad, Daddy.  Just try it again...it's okay!
Jarod: (eats the bite laughing)
Cael: See?

Cael's take on the song "Sunshine on my Shoulders" by John Denver...

My Dad: (Singing) Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy...
Cael: No Papa!  Sunshine on you shoulders makes you hot; it will burn you!
My Dad: (laughing) Okay.  Sunshine on my shoulders makes me hot and burns me; Sunshine in my eyes just makes me blind.
Cael: That's better.

Why you should never have a birthday party before the actual birthday...10/8/10

We had Cael's party at his pre-school on Friday but his birthday wasn't until that Sunday.  On Saturday, this is the conversation that Cael and I had...
Cael: Mommy, I'm 3 now?
Me: No, your birthday is tomorrow.  You can be 3 then.
Cael: I was 3 at school...you sang to me!
Me: We were just having your party at school.  You weren't really 3 then...you can be 3 tomorrow.
Cael: Oh dear, Mommy, it's not nice to lie.  Go to the corner!

Discovering his voice...

Let me first explain my little boy (Cael)...
I am the mother of one three year old boy.  When he was born I immediately began teaching him American Sign Language (ASL).  I took some courses in college and had researched the benefits of teaching infants sign language and decided that I really wanted my little boy to know this beautiful language.  It was wonderful when he was tiny; we could understand what he wanted (drink, food, more, milk) and he could use manners (please, thank you, sorry) before he ever turned one!  It was great.  Then we noticed that he wasn't speaking much.  At first, we were concerned and the nurses and doctors in his pediatricians office seemed concerned, as well.  He could still communicate with us but, his verbal skills seemed to be delayed.  Then, one glorious day, he started talking.  He hasn't stopped yet and the things that come out of his mouth are hysterical!  I never know what his mind will come up with next and it's usually something I would never expect a three year old to say.  We teach him new words all the time to see what he can retain and I continue to teach him new signs all the time.

Now to explain the blog...
When he started speaking I wanted to share some of his thoughts (since I always found them to be so funny).  I started posting them as my status on Facebook.  Soon, I had friends and family urging me to write a book or start a blog...this is the result of that urging.  I hope that who ever reads this blog is as entertained by my little man as I am.  Thank you for reading and, again, we hope that we can bring a laugh to your heart and a smile to your face!
