If you were a boy...3/31/11

Cael and I were driving to work/school this morning in the light rain when Cael had a question...

Cael: Mom, do you have your lights on?
Me: Yes.
Cael: Are you going to leave them on all day...even when you park?
Me: No.
Cael: Why?
Me: If I leave the lights on all day, while I'm parked, the battery will die and the car won't start when it's time to go home.
Cael: And Daddy would have to come fix it?
Me: Well, I could fix a dead battery.
Cael: If you were a boy you could.
Me: I'm a girl and I still could.
Cael: Mom, girls can't fix things because they get a stressed feeling and get tired...then they need a boy to fix it.

I think this is going a bit far...I'm going to have a talk with Cael and Daddy tonight...I am getting that stressed feeling Cael described, though!

I lost my family...3/30/11

We were dropping my cousin Shea back off at the hospital to stay with his mom (she has been very sick and needs prayer) when Cael realized we weren't staying any longer...

Cael: (crying)  I want Shea!
Me: Cael, calm down.  We'll see him again in a day or so.
Cael: (crying harder)  I lost my family and I'll never see them anymore!
Me: You're going to see them again in a few days.
Cael: I'll feel better if you take me back to Uncle Shea...(sniffle)
Me: Sorry, you can't go back tonight.
Cael: (stops crying) Fine...then I'm not making you laugh anymore!

After I finished laughing he told me how this situation was really not funny.  This kid is so dramatic; I swear I'm never bored!

Question from out of nowhere...3/30/11

Cael and I were on our way to work/school this morning when he decided to ask a few questions of his own...

Cael: Mom, are we going to have a baby in our house soon?
Me: No.  Why?
Cael: Evey is having a baby in her house soon.  Can we have one, too?
Me: One day but not any day soon...what would you name a baby if we had one?
Cael: Robin.
Me: What if we bring home a little girl (I realize Robin is for both but he does not)?
Cael: You can't...I'd just squish her up and make a boy.

I think I should probably figure out a way to explain that babies are not made of play-dough...not to mention that a week ago, he was convinced that he would have a sister one day.

What will you do when you grow up?...3/30/11

Cael and I were driving to work this morning...

Cael: Mom, what will you do when you grow up?
Me: I was pretty sure I did grow up...do you know something I don't?
Cael: You're just little now...when you get big then you can grow up.
Me: Okay...well I want to teach.  What will you do when you grow up?
Cael: Be Batman.
Me: What if someone else is already Batman?  What will you do then?
Cael: Be Batman...I'm the original Batman!

When did this child learn the word original and, please tell me he is going to grow out of this phase before I have a grown son running around Atlanta in a cape and tights!

Ready for church...3/27/11

Cael got himself ready for church this morning...

Cael: Mom, I'm ready for church!

Me: I don't think you can go like that.
Cael: Why?  I'm wearing a tie...
Me: I'm pretty sure that's not a tie that was meant for church.
Cael: I can't believe you don't like my outfit!  It hurts my feelings...
Me: I'm sorry.  I didn't mean to hurt your feelings...
Cael: I forgive you...can I wear my tie to church, now?
Me: Nope...still can't go like that.
Cael: Fine...I'll wait for Daddy.

I'm pretty sure his dad is going to say no, too.  I love this child!

No school for Carmine...3/25/11

We were getting ready to walk out the door this morning on our way to work/school when Carmine (our miniature schnauzer) tried to sneak out the door.  I stopped him just before he made it through the opening...

Cael: What is he doing?
Me: I guess he's trying to go with us.
Cael: Well that's ridiculous!  He can't go to school.  He doesn't have permission...or hands!

Poor child was so upset with that dog.  How dare he try to come to school without permission or hands...apparently, that's ridiculous!

**Note: I know it sounds absurd that a 3 year old would use words like ridiculous or permission, however, he truly does say the things that I post.  Luckily, my child is entertaining enough without my needing to invent scenarios.  I hope that this disclaimer makes this blog even more enjoyable to read.  For those of you who talk to my child on a regular basis, you already know this and are probably thinking about the crazy things he has said to you, personally...**

Well, sorry!...3/22/11

Jarod and Cael were sitting together in the driveway working on something "very manly" (Cael's words) when Jarod looked over and spit in the grass (on his right side).  Cael (sitting on Jarod's left side) decided he should spit in the grass, too.  Of course, he turns his head, spits in his manliest fashion (really makes a mom proud...), and it lands right on Jarod...

Jarod: Awww Cael, why did you spit on me?  That's gross!
Cael: (looking completely offended)  Well...sorry!  I was trying to spit in the grass like you, Daddy, but apparently I can't spit that far, yet!  It wasn't on purpose...I said sorry...I was just trying to spit...
Jarod: It's fine.  Next time, spit in the grass on your side of the driveway...okay?
Cael: Sure Daddy, whatever you say.

It was like watching Laurel and Hardy...I love my guys!

Look what you did...3/21/11

Last night I was doing the dishes while Jarod worked out in the front yard.  Cael was inside with me and decided that he wanted to be with Daddy...

Cael: Mom, can I go outside with Daddy?
Me: Sure, let me just let him know you're going to be with him...(walking to the front door)
Cael: (pulling on the back door)  Mom!?
Me: Cael, come on....do you want to go outside with Daddy.
Cael: Yes...
Me: Come here...

Finally Cael comes running to the front door to meet me.  When I open the door, Jarod is nowhere to be seen.

Me: Where did that man go?
Cael: That man is in the back yard...if you would just listen to me...
Me: Hey...watch that.  (walking to the back door)

When we got to the backyard, it was empty, too...

Cael: (looking more than a little frustrated)  Mom, look what you did...

We did finally find Jarod...and apparently it was my fault it took so long...

How do you eat it?...3/19/11

Saturday, our little family made a trip to Alabama to visit some family there.  We had spent most of the day at one of my uncle's houses and had not eaten more than a snack.  When we got back to my Aunt Carolyn's house she asked Cael if he was hungry...

Aunt Carolyn: Cael, do you want something to eat?  I can make you a turkey sandwich.
Cael: Sure...that would be good.
Aunt Carolyn: Okay, how do you eat it?
Cael: (miming how he eats a sandwich)  Like this...?
Aunt Carolyn: I mean, do you like mayo and mustard?
Cael: (still trying to be gentle with her) On the bread...?
Aunt Carolyn: I know where it goes, do you want it?
Cael: Sure...that would be good...?

She finally just made the sandwich.  Poor kid just kept looking at me and his grandma like, "Is she going to be okay?  I don't really need the sandwich if it's going to make her crazy."  Wish I could capture his face at times like that so I could post that, too...

Tacky Day...3/18/11

Today is Tacky Day at my school and, of course, I don't plan to let my students down.  I woke up a few minutes early to be sure that I was able to look as tacky as possible and then I went to get my child...

Cael: (with sleepy eyes and half a yawn) Hi, mom...what's wrong with your clothes?
Me: What do you mean?  Don't I match?
Cael: Not exactly...you can try harder tomorrow. (as he stumbles out of his room and toward the bathroom)

I couldn't help but laugh.  I tried to explain what "Tacky Day" is but I'm pretty sure it was lost on him.  He's convinced that I need help matching my clothes from now on...maybe I'll take him up on it!

Green Eggs and Ham...3/15/11

I was getting ready to put Cael to bed last night and we always read a bedtime story.  This was the first time we were going to read Green Eggs and Ham...

Cael: What book is that?  I don't know it...
Me: Oh Cael, this is a great book!  As a matter of fact, this book is one of Aunt Sam's favorite books!
Cael: Is it about the mall?

Even though they live so far apart, he knows her so well!

Looking for this?...3/15/11

Cael was counting his change yesterday when he decided he wanted to play a game...

Cael: (hiding his money in one hand) Mom, what hand is my money in?
Me: (setting the table and not really looking) That one.
Cael: AAAAAA (the loudest buzzer sound I've ever heard) Wrong! I win, you lose...
What hand is it in now?
Me: (still not really looking) That hand.
Cael: AAAAAA (again with the buzzer) Hahahaha...I win!
Me: Okay, Cael...we'll play in a few minutes.  Let me finish this.
Cael: (holding out his money)  Oooo...looking for this, mom?  You want my money?  Well, you can't have it...it's mine!  Hahahaha...

I'm pretty sure he gets this crazy attachment to money from his father...and possibly the competitive nature, too.

You are missing my point...3/9/11

We were driving home from work/school yesterday when Cael saw a cat...

Cael: Mom, look!  A cat!
Me: Oh yeah...do you like cats?
Cael: No, they bite.
Me: Oh, so you like dogs?
Cael: No, they bite, too.
Me: Not all dogs bite...we have Carmine and he doesn't bite you.
Cael: Well, actually he does when I pinch him.
Me: Well don't pinch him.  Do you want me to pinch you?
Cael: No!  Why would I want you to pinch me, you silly goose?!
Me: Well, just like you don't want me to pinch you; Carmine doesn't want you to pinch him.
Cael: Did you ask him?
Me: No...I just know he doesn't want to be pinched.  I think you're missing my point.
Cael: Mom, don't poke me, either.  It's not nice to use your hands... use your words.

I'm pretty sure I started off trying to teach him a lesson and I'm not sure how I came to be the one being reprimanded.  So many of my conversations with this child end up very different from the way I intended them to go.

Cael vs. Daddy...take 3...3/6/11

Sunday night, as we arrive home from the restaurant...

Cael: Can we play a game, now?
Jarod: No, sir...it's past your bedtime.  You're going straight upstairs to your bathroom to change.
Cael: Do I have to?
Jarod: Yeah...it's pretty late.  We might not even have time to take you to your room...I think you'll just sleep in the bathtub tonight.
Cael: Oh no...not again!

Hahaha...as if the child has ever had to sleep in he bathtub!  Jarod didn't even know how to respond...

Cael vs. Daddy...take 2...3/6/11

Sunday evening, on our way to meet Grandma and Papa for dinner...

Cael: (from the backseat) Mom, I love you!
Jarod:(before I could answer) Well, I love her more.
Cael: No you don't, I love her more!
Jarod: I love her most.
Cael: No, I love her more and most!
Jarod: (chuckling) I love her most, infinity!
Cael: No you don't!  You're not Buzz Lightyear!  I love her most, infinity and beyond!  I'm Buzz...

So cute...I'm going to call this one a draw, although I'm not so sure Cael didn't win...

Cael vs. Daddy...take 1...3/5/11

Saturday afternoon, when Jarod got home, Cael and I were in my room working on a project...

Jarod: (coming into our bedroom) Cael, why is your bedroom light on?
Cael: (not in his bedroom)  Because I can't see in the dark.

I couldn't help but to laugh...

When I grow up...3/4/11

Tonight after I finished reading to Cael...

Me: Cael, how old are you?
Cael: Three.
Me: How old will you be on your birthday?
Cael: Four.
Me: What do you want to be when you grow up?
Cael: An adult.

I just wish more people had this goal.  He couldn't figure out why I thought that was so funny...

Do you know...3/3/11

On the way to work this morning...

Cael: Mom, do you know Jesus?
Me: Yes...do you?
Cael: Yes.  He's really big and he's in my heart and he's my best friend.  There is only one Jesus and his name is Jesus.
Me: That's good.  Anything else?
Cael: I talk to him all the time and he fights crime with me.
Me: Well, I think that's awesome, Cael.  Jesus should be everyone's best friend.
Cael: He can't...he's my best friend, remember?

I think we're off to a good start...now we need to work on sharing the truth...and Jesus.

No way out...3/2/11

Tonight we were giving Cael a bath before bed.  It was time to pull the drain to get out...

Cael: (whispering to his rubber ducks): Hey duckies...the water is going down...there's no way out!

I'm not sure if he was worried about their safety or taunting them...

Beautiful Flowers: Take Two...2/28/11

Yesterday, Jarod and Cael were going to do some yard work...

Jarod: Cael, you know all of the "beautiful" purple flowers that you like so much?
Cael: Yes.  They're right there!
Jarod: Well, we need to get all of them because they frustrate me.

Cael: (Wandering around the yard) Hey, purple flowers, you need to go...you frustrate my daddy!  Get out! (picking flowers)

Now, if he sees a purple flower in the yard, he yells at it and has to pick it...it's like he has no choice; how dare those flowers frustrate his daddy!
